DECATHLON PULSE teams up with REBIKE MOBILITY to boost e-bike circular business models
Lille, France (October 23, 2024) – DECATHLON PULSE, the investment arm and start-up studio of DECATHLON, and REBIKE®, leader in the DACH (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) region for the refurbishment and sale of “as new” second hand electric bikes, have teamed-up through a notable investment to facilitate the scaling of the sale of refurbished e-bikes in Europe.
The e-bike revolution is reshaping European mobility, with sales doubling in the past five years and projections indicating 100 million e-bikes in circulation by 2030. As this surge aligns with increasing regulations promoting sustainable transportation, DECATHLON and REBIKE® are positioning themselves at the forefront of the trend, offering a sustainable alternative to new e-bikes through reuse and refurbishment.
Aligning with DECATHLON’s strategy, DECATHLON PULSE has invested, alongside existing REBIKE shareholders including Circularity Capital, Tengelmann Ventures, Parkshore and Vorwerk Ventures, highlighting its commitment to fostering sustainability within the cycling industry. With this investment into REBIKE, Decathlon PULSE reinforces its commitment to the circular economy and the professionalization of the European e-bike secondary market.
Decathlon is supporting the company through its global reach, omnichannel sales expertise, and international infrastructure. REBIKE® retains its independent operation to drive its specialized knowledge and cutting edge technology in refurbishment, its digital integration in industrial processes, as well as its expertise in the end-to-end value chain from collection of e-bikes from partners such as bike leasing companies to the resale of e-bikes on Rebike.com and various other on-and-offline channels. This powerful combination is set to drive economic growth while promoting sustainability, positioning both companies at the forefront of the circular economy in the expanding e-bike market.
Thomas Bernik, REBIKE CEO and Co-Founder: “By addressing consumer affordability and driving the trend of reuse, refurbished e-bikes are poised to become a standard in the bicycle sector. We're excited to take this next step with DECATHLON PULSE, leveraging their global expertise and international perspective to accelerate our operations across new markets."
Franck Vigo, DECATHLON PULSE CEO: “We are delighted to pursue DECATHLON PULSE's growth trajectory with such a renowned partner as REBIKE. This investment not only aligns perfectly with our strategy of accelerating sustainability but also positions us at the forefront of the circular economy in cycling. Together, we're not just tapping into the growing second-life market – we're reshaping it, proving that sustainability and business growth can go hand in hand.”
Sophie O’Kelly de Gallagh, DECATHLON PULSE Circular Economy and Sustainability Investment Director: “Our alliance with REBIKE represents a beacon of innovation in the cycling industry, showcasing the immense potential of circularity. By combining our global reach with REBIKE's expertise in the e-bike industry, we're driving positive impact in the sports ecosystem and setting new standards for sustainable mobility”.
Andrew Shannon, Partner at Circularity Capital: “We’re delighted to welcome Decathlon PULSE as a fellow investor in REBIKE and excited to thereby benefit from Decathlon’s increasing investment in the e-bike market. Our joint investment further undermine REBIKE’s impressive growth and position as the premium refurbishment and retail expert in Europe’s largest e-Bike market.”
As this collaboration unfolds, it is expected to attract new customers, top talent, and potential partners, further cementing REBIKE's position as a European market leader and Decathlon's role as an influential force in sustainable mobility solutions.
